Alvernia University is a private university located in Reading (also having two satellite centers in Philadelphia and Pottsville (Schuylkill County)), which is a city in the US state of Pennsylvania, serving as the county seat of Berks County, with a population of over 80 000 inhabitants, at the time of the 2008 census.
The university was established in 1958, but traces its roots back in 1926, when the Bernardine Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis established a Teacher's Seminarium for the education of the Sisters, the school gaining university status in 2008. It offers its students `more than 50 majors and minors delivered in a perfect environment to grow and learn`, providing them an education `Guided by Franciscan values and the ideal of `knowledge joined with love,` and rooted in the Catholic and liberal arts traditions`.
Alvernia's athletic teams are known as the Crusaders and they compete in NCAA Division III, as members of the Freedom Conference of the Middle Atlantic States Athletic Corporation and of the Eastern College Athletic Conference, in 8 men's and 10 women's intercollegiate sports. Their distinctive colors are maroon and gold.
